Drama

Extra-curricular drama is a great strength of the school, with a busy programme of theatre events each term. There are usually three or four productions each year, in addition to evening showings of examination pieces. There are strong links with the music department with a musical staged biennially. Productions in the last three years have included (please click on production title to view photo gallery): West Side Story, The Tempest, The Dumb Waiter, Hamlet, Comedy of Errors, Nicholas Nickleby Parts I and II, Anything Goes, Seussical, the MusicalThe Producers and The Importance of Being Earnest.

There are frequent visits to local and national theatres (over twenty-five in the past year) and visits by practitioners and touring theatre companies are welcomed. The subject can also be studied at GCSE and A-level. There are drama and dance clubs for various year groups and opportunities to be trained in all areas of technical theatre.

The department achieved national success in 2008 at the National Student Drama Festival in Scarborough, with a student-directed production of Pinter's The Dumb Waiter winning a new award Enterprise, created for the first time this year in response to Will Edward's production and performance.

The Department is housed in a recently designed studio workshop with new sound and lighting systems. The studio space is used for examination performances, whilst main school productions take place in the Concert Hall - a versatile performance area that can be adapted to accommodate large-scale musicals or smaller studio-style productions.
