The majority of Fifth Form students at RGS stay on into the Sixth Form, and we see this as important in maintaining the inclusive ethos of the school. Students who stay on benefit from the Sixth Form facilities, the new opportunities available to them, increased independence and chances to demonstrate leadership, and the outstanding support and advice that RGS provides as they prepare for life beyond school.
All students are invited to the 16+ Information Evening in October, where they have an opportunity to find out about life in the Sixth Form at RGS and to talk to Heads of Departments about individual subjects. They are also encouraged to talk to current Sixth formers to find out more about what being in the Sixth Form is like.
The school expects internal applicants for the Sixth Form to achieve an average of 5.5 points at GCSE (where A*=8, A=7, etc). They should also have demonstrated an excellent attitude to work, and a willingness to contribute to the life of the school.
Students who subsequently obtain all A* grades in their GCSEs will be awarded an Academic Scholarship of £1,000. Internal applicants can also apply for Sports Scholarships and for the Paul Bewshea Memorial Science Scholarship. Further details of these will be sent to all parents during the Autumn Term.
Existing students are not required to apply formally to enter the Sixth Form. The Headmaster will write to the parents of any student over whom the school has any concerns well in advance of any decisions being required.
