Classics at RGS

Classics is thriving at Reigate Grammar School, and the department is large and successful.

Latin is taught using the Cambridge Latin course to all in the first two forms (Years 7 and 8).  Latin and Greek are optional subjects in the Third Form (Year 9), where we are joined by a number of children after 13+ entry.  Approximately three-quarters of the Third Form opt to continue with Latin or Latin and Greek.  At GCSE level there are some 95 pupils studying Latin, 40 studying Greek and 20 studying Classical Civilization.  Greek is taught with Latin to the most able students who take both GCSEs at the end of the Fifth Form.  We use the Cambridge Graded Tests in the junior years, and at GCSE we follow the OCR syllabuses.

In the Sixth Form (Years 12 and 13) there are usually around 25 students studying Latin, 3 Greek and 10 Classical Civilization, and these numbers have risen each year. We follow the OCR specifications for Latin and Greek, and topics taught in Classical Civilization for the AQA syllabus are at the discretion of the individual teachers.

There is also much going on beyond the classroom.  The Second Form visit Fishbourne each year, and the Third Form spend a day in Bath.  The Second Form also have a Roman Day as part of the Summer Festival.  For the exam years, there are ad hoc trips, theatre visits and lectures.  The department also boasts large overseas trips, taking groups of about 50 pupils to Italy or Greece on a biennial basis. The most recent visit was to Italy in 2009 and a trip to Greece goes this year.
