Rugby

Head of Rugby: Mr Dai Bader and Mr Doug Cooper

Rugby is the major boys’ sport during the Autumn and Spring terms. The school regularly puts out two sides at U18, U16, U15, U14 and U13, and three sides at U12 level. In some years, if numbers allow, we put out a third team in each of the older years. Whereas the first team in each year contains the best players in that age group, the second and third sides are all about participation and we hope that any boy who wants to play rugby will be able to get a game on a Saturday. All year groups have a dedicated games session and one after-school session (two for the U18s and U16s) every week. All sides play every Saturday from September until the February half term. After this time, each year group plays seven-a-side rugby, although there are still fifteen-a-side games for those not involved in the shorter format.

The U18 and U15 sides enter their respective Daily Mail Cup competitions and in the past the U18s have reached the semi-finals of both the Cup and the Vase competitions. Apart from these competitions the school plays a regular season against traditional rivals.

The School regularly produces players of county standard, and a few progress to Divisional and International Schools level. Our playing fields host County Age Group trials for U15-U18 levels.

The school organises tours at U14 and U17 level. The U14s have been to Dublin and Waterford every Easter since 1992. They play three games at both A and B XV level during their five-day tour. The senior rugby players have toured overseas since 1975. The early years saw the school blazing a trail to British Columbia and the west coast of America every three years, but recently the tour has been to South Africa every two years. A great deal of fundraising is done in school to help finance these tours and to allow all students the opportunity to participate.
