Maths & Further Maths

Mathematics, one of the oldest academic subjects, is still very much alive and growing. New developments are taking place all the time; some as a result of fresh ideas within mathematics itself, and others stimulated by applications to the physical, biological and social sciences, Economics and Computing.

As Mathematics has such a wide variety of important applications, there is a constant demand for well-trained mathematicians in a wide range of jobs. They can be found in aircraft design teams, analysing drug trial statistics, studying the weather, in management positions in companies, working as actuaries, accountants, teachers, researchers, computer programmers and so on.

At Reigate Grammar School, Mathematics is available at four different levels, namely:

• AS Level Mathematics – three modules (two core and one applications);
• A Level Mathematics – six modules (four core and two applications);
• A Level Mathematics & AS Further Mathematics – nine modules (five core and four applications);
• A Level Mathematics & A Level Further Mathematics – twelve modules (six/seven core and five/six applications)

Students who wish to embark on any of these courses will need a good grounding in basic algebra and have the confidence to use the techniques learnt at GCSE. They should be able to work on their own and have the ability to apply given knowledge to a variety of problems.

The applications consist of four mechanics modules, four statistics modules and two decision modules.

A more detailed syllabus is available from the mathematics department.
