Mr James William Dean
Educated at Oundle School and Emmanuel College, Cambridge. James Dean has lived in Reigate for the last 30 years. All three of his children were educated at Reigate Grammar School.
Trained as a Chartered Accountant and joined partnerships of Price Waterhouse followed by Ernst & Young, specialising in the Financial Services Sector, prior to starting a new career as a Non-Executive Director.
Current directorships include Liverpool Victoria (trading as LV=) and a building society. Mr Dean is an active member of Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales serving on the Financial Reporting and Financial Services Committees.
Sir Colin Chandler
Vice-Chairman, Chairman of Finance & Foundation Committee
Educated at St Joseph’s Academy and Hatfield Polytechnic (now the University of Hertfordshire). Spent many years working in British Aerospace culminating in becoming Divisional Managing Director followed by Group Marketing Director.
Seconded from BAe to the Ministry of Defence as Head of Defence Export Services during which time was knighted for Services to Export as well as becoming Commander of the Order of the Lion of Finland. Some years were spent at Vickers plc eventually becoming Chairman followed by Chairman of Racal Electronics plc.Was also Deputy Chairman of Smiths Group plc ,Chairman of easyJet plc, Chairman of Automotive Technik Ltd and TI Automotive Ltd and Pro-Chancellor of Cranfield University.
Currently Chairman of Clarity Commerce Solutions plc, of Future Film Group plc and a Non-executive Director of Holiday Taxis.com.
Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society, Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants and Honorary DSc – Hertfordshire.
Joined the Board of Governors of Reigate Grammar School in 2003.
Mr David Adams
Educated at Canford School, David read Economic & Social History at Exeter University graduating in 1980. Later he studied at Cranfield School of Management completing an Executive MBA in 1994.
David has operated in the Human Resources profession throughout his career and currently works as an independent HR consultant, with specialisms in learning and organisation development, for international clients. Until 2012 he worked for Harsco Corporation where he was HR Director Global Operations. He joined Harsco in 2004 at their Europe HQ in Surrey following seven years with Société Générale de Surveillance in Geneva. Previously David held positions at Guinness plc, Parker Hannifin Corp and TI Group plc. He is a Member of the Charter Institute of Personnel & Development.
David is married and has three children, a girl and two boys. The eldest left RGS in the summer of 2008, attended Sheffield University, and is training to be an architect. The second left RGS in summer 2011 and is reading Economics with French at Nottingham University. His youngest child is studying A evels at RGS.
David’s interests include squash, cricket (Somerset and MCC) singing (RGS Cantata Choir) economic history, politics & current affairs, the arts, and technology. He is a Liveryman of the Company of Plumbers.
David Adams joined the Board of Governors of Reigate Grammar School in 2009.
Mr Marc Benton
Educated at Reigate Grammar School (1982 – 1990) and the University of Birmingham studying Commerce and French followed by a Masters of European Business at L’Ecole Superieure de Commerce de Clermont Ferrand in France.
In 1995, Marc entered oil and gas investment banking and joined Kleinwort Benson as a Graduate Trainee based In London and then Moscow. In 1998, Marc joined Salomon Brothers/Citigroup in a similar role in London before relocating to Hong Kong in 2004. Marc returned to the UK to live in Reigate in 2014 and his current role is Managing Director, Head of EMEA Oil & Gas Investment Banking at Deutsche Bank.
Marc is married with two children, both of whom are currently at RGS. His interests include travel and golf.
Marc joined the Board of Governors of Reigate Grammar School in 2015 and is also a member of the Finance and Foundation Committee.
Mr Colin Cobain
Mr Cobain’s career has concentrated on leading business change through the application of technology for major UK and global companies, including Tesco, Kingfisher and SABMiller. In addition, Mr Cobain has held the position of Non-Exec Director for HMRC and Non-Exec Chairman for Safe Patient Systems. He is also a Partner at Oliver Wyman, a leading management consultancy.
Interests include sports, the theatre and travel. Mr Cobain’s daughters both attended RGS.
Joined the Board of Reigate Grammar School in 2014.
Mr Dave Cole
Dave was educated at Reigate Grammar School after which he read Law at the University of Exeter. It seemed unlikely that becoming a primary school teacher was ‘on the cards’ but after a chance visit to a local primary school, Dave embarked on a teaching career and he has never looked back.
Dave is passionate about the education of the whole child and the importance that a ‘values education’ plays in shaping well rounded independent learners, who are ready and able to meet the demands of the 21st century head-on and with confidence. Dave’s passion and particular area of interest is the power of ‘grit’ or a ‘growth mindset’ and how this can impact on learning.
Since 2003, his involvement in, and commitment to education, has seen him hold a variety of leadership roles: School Improvement Adviser for Surrey, Training Facilitator for the Future Leaders’ Trust, Support Tutor for the Surrey South Farnham, School-Centred Initial Teaching Training Program, Chairperson and Strategic Lead for local school confederation along with three primary school headships.
Dave now enjoys his current role as an independent Education and Leadership Consultant.
Dave is married with three boys.

Mr Brian Day
Educated at the University of Strathclyde, School of Architecture, Mr Day won a Glasgow Institute of Architect’s Student Prize in 1973.
Brian was responsible for many key projects over the years including: Executive Project Manager for the Goldman Sachs European HQ (“Peterborough Court”) on the site of the old Daily Telegraph; Director for the West India Quay development – a joint venture project with Marriott and Manhattan Loft Corporation in Canary Wharf; Director of the award-winning Radisson hotel in Glasgow, and adviser to the LSE on student accommodation and teaching projects. More recently, Brian was Director of the redevelopment of the Grade 1 listed St. Pancras Chambers into a Renaissance hotel and private apartments. He has been a key figure in the development of some of the most exciting architectural projects the UK has seen in the last thirty years.
He is married with one son who attended RSM. His interests include photography and painting.
Brian Day joined the Board of Governors of Reigate Grammar School in 2015 and is also a member of the Estates and Premises Committee.
Mr Mark Elsey
Chairman of Governance & Risk Management Committee
Educated at Reigate Grammar School and King’s College London, Mr Elsey attended Chancery Lane Law School before joining Cameron Markby as a trainee solicitor. Mr Elsey is now a Partner at Ashurst where he heads up the Energy, Transport and Infrastructure sector.
Mr Elsey’s son and daughter both attended Reigate Grammar School. Mr Elsey’s family connections with the school are extensive: Mr Elsey met his wife, Mrs Jacqueline Elsey, while at RGS; his father and father in law both attended the school.
Mr Elsey is a member of Old Reigatian RFC and of Reigate Heath Golf Club. Charity work includes his role as Board member, Great Ormond Street Hospital Raising the Roof Charity and Chairman of the RGS London Professional Group, in support of the RGS Foundation raising funds towards ‘needs blind’ entry to RGS.

Mr Luke Herbert
Educated at Cheltenham Grammar School before completing a BSc at Imperial College, a MB BS at University of London and, latterly, a FRCOphth at Royal College of Ophthalmologists, London. Mr Herbert is a Consultant Retinal Surgeon and has held the roles of Lead Clinician Opthalmology and Audit Lead Ophthalmology for Surrey and Sussex Health NHS Trust with papers published in the British Medical Journal and specialised medical journals including Retna.
Interests include playing the flute, guitar, trumpet and saxophone. Mr Herbert is married with three daughters who attend Reigate Grammar School.
Mr Roger Newstead
Educated at The King’s School, Ely and Reading University, Mr Newstead then completed two years of National Service in the Army. He joined the oil and gas industry and worked for Esso, Shell, Mobil and BP in a career embracing supply and distribution, shipping, economics, IT, personnel and public affairs. He was Chairman of the Public Affairs Committees of two of the UK industry’s trade associations and had to co-ordinate the industry’s response to the Piper Alpha disaster.
Councillor Roger Newstead has represented Reigate Hill Ward on Reigate and Banstead Borough Council since 2001. He was a member of the Borough’s Executive from 2002 until 2007, from 2009 until 2012 and from 2013 until 2014. He had responsibility for the Projects and Performance portfolio in which he led Phase 1 of the regeneration of Redhill. He also led the project to refurbish the Old Town Hall in Reigate and bring it back into use from near dereliction. Councillor Newstead was Mayor of Reigate and Banstead in 2008-2009 and 2012-2013.
Roger is married and has three children and six grandchildren. His interests include most sports, concerts, theatre, steam railways and family history.

Professor Sarah Sayce
Professor Sarah Sayce is a Chartered Surveyor by profession, having undertaken a BSc (Hons) in Estate Management at the University of Reading and subsequently qualified whilst working for Stanley Hicks and Son, a City of London firm of consultant surveyors. She then worked within the corporate sector before taking a short career break to start a family and moving into academe at Kingston University.
She undertook a PhD in property investment and for nearly 20 years she has held the position of Head of School of Surveying & Planning at Kingston. Professor Sayce has authored four books and has written numerous published papers and research reports, many relating to property and sustainability, in addition to sitting on various advisory boards within the profession and the editorial boards of four refereed Journals within the field of Built Environment. A long standing resident of Reigate, Professor Sayce is involved with local community groups including the Buckland Bell ringers and Dunottar Choral Society.
