A performance of ‘Zimbe’ at St Mary’s Church

On Saturday night, children from Reigate St Mary’s joined forces with members of Reigate Grammar School Junior Choir and the English Arts Chorale for a wonderful performance of the upbeat choral piece, ‘Zimbe!’

The students were fortunate enough to have the composer himself, Alexander L’Estrange, leading them with his jazz quintet and giving them encouragement to really get in the swing of the music by adding some simple choreography and translating the African text. The audience were delighted by the children’s performance and they received a very enthusiastic reception.

Another piece by John Rutter (Mass of the Children) took up the first half and the director of the English Arts Chorale, Leslie Olive was extremely impressed by the way in which the children handled some very difficult music and made a beautiful sound. Well done to everyone involved.

We hope to do more collaborative concerts within the community such as this in the future.
