#RSMFridayFastFive – Mrs Higginbotham

Why teaching? – It took me a while to get into teaching! When I left university I didn’t go straight into teaching, but it’s something I always thought I would enjoy and be good at because I really enjoy being around little people. When I had my children, I helped out a lot in their schools, and that made me realise it was definitely something I wanted to do, and so I retrained, and here I am!

Favourite children’s book and why? I love so many books it’s hard to pick just one! I think it would have to be ‘Rooftoppers’ by Katherine Rundell, it is such a quirky and imaginative book. I also loved ‘Varjak Paw’ by SF Said, I just think the idea of the secret martial arts for cats was brilliant, and I am a real cat lover too.

Best subject at school? I love languages, so it’s got to be English, French and Spanish. What’s not to love about a subject where you get to read books on a daily basis and call it work!  However, now I prefer teaching maths to literacy.

Best teaching moment? There have been so many! Last year, my class made up a story together and it was just brilliant to watch them working together and coming up with such creative ideas. It always amazes me what a four year old is capable of on a daily basis. And I always enjoy seeing the children I have worked with when they are 3 or 4 flourishing as they move up through the school, happy and confident children

Favourite quote? It’s not really a quote, but it’s a rule I apply to my life:

‘treat people the way you expect to be treated’
