#RSMFridayFastFive – Mrs Tharp

Our new Games teacher, Mrs Tharp, takes the Friday Fast Five challenge this week.

What is your favourite sport? – I enjoy playing and watching lots of different sports but hockey and netball are my favourites. Currently I play for Reigate Priory Hockey Club in the 2nd XI team. I regularly support Surrey Storm Netball at the Surrey Sports Park and am also a keen supporter of Surrey Stars Cricket and Athletics. My children are sport enthusiasts so you’ll usually find me at the weekends either on the sidelines watching them or, more often, coaching and umpiring.

Why did you become a teacher? – I always wanted to be a PE teacher to pass on my love for sport. If children can gain important fundamental skills at an early age they will have confidence in themselves and hopefully develop a lifelong love of physical activity.

Best teaching moment? – It is always a joy to coach teams and individuals who then progress to performing at a high level. However, it is often the early steps a child makes that are the ones you truly remember.  My most memorable moments have come from working with children, sometimes for weeks or months, to develop their water confidence. When a child is apprehensive in their first swimming lessons, it is brilliant to see them breaking through their anxiety and taking the plunge.

Is there a particular sports person who has inspired you? – I remember watching Sally Gunnell and Dame Kelly Holmes when growing up and being inspired by their hard work, determination and success.  They were strong female sporting role models.
