Why did you choose a career working with children?

I chose a career working with children because, during my A-levels, I discovered a passion for psychology and child development, which led me to pursue a degree in childhood studies. Throughout my studies, I volunteered with various charities and realised that I wanted to do something practical and vocational. After university, I participated in a teaching project in Nepal, where I taught English to children. It was an incredibly rewarding experience and cemented my desire to work in education. Upon returning, I worked as a classroom assistant at my old primary school and absolutely loved being part of a child’s learning journey, which confirmed my decision to pursue teaching as a career.

Your favourite subjects at school?

My favourite subjects at school were often the creative ones, especially art. I loved the opportunity to express myself, and this led me to study art photography at A-level. I also had a strong interest in English Literature, as I enjoyed exploring different stories and perspectives through reading. Even though Maths and Science were never my favourite subjects at school, it surprised me how much I love teaching them. There’s something incredibly rewarding about seeing children problem-solve and having those light-bulb moments.

Why Lower School?

I love working in the Lower School because there’s never a dull moment with younger children—they constantly surprise you and keep you on your toes! It’s incredibly rewarding to see them grow, develop, and make such significant progress in such a short time. I also enjoy the nurturing aspect of working with this age group, where you’re not only teaching but also supporting their overall development and wellbeing, taking care of their needs holistically.

Most memorable moment in your teaching career?

My most memorable moments in teaching have probably been the trips outside of school. I love how much enthusiasm the children bring to these experiences, and they always result in great stories. I’ll never forget the day we visited the Tower of London during gale-force winds, being dive-bombed by seagulls in Brighton, or cheering on the pig race at Bocketts Farm. These trips create lasting memories and bring learning to life!

My favourite quote:

“There can be no keener revelation of a society’s soul than the way in which it treats its children.” – Nelson Mandela

This quote has always stuck with me, as my mum, whose background is in nursing and health visiting, had a postcard with these words on her desk. It’s a reminder of the vital importance of how we care for and nurture children.
