Year 5 African Day Workshop

Year 5 had the most wonderful African Day this week. We were all transported to Africa and immersed in African culture, storytelling, music and dance. The children were absolutely enraptured by Kwame the moment we started the day, as he told us stories of African kings, queens, princesses, gold and palaces. We asked lots of interesting questions throughout the day, some which Kwame was very impressed with. We were all amazed when Kwame showed us how to change a milk bottle into a beautiful bird. In the afternoon the noise of drumming filled the whole school, as we learnt how to make high and low pitch sound and created beautiful music with our very own band. We finished the day by learning lots of different African dance moves and put it together to make an amazing, choreographed dance. We all feel very lucky to have had the opportunity for this stunning start and we can’t wait to continue our topic.

On Monday Year 5 had an exciting “African day” with Kwame (from Ghana). He talked to us about Africa and his life. It was really interesting to learn about his culture.

A huge amount of fun was had learning to play the African drum called a Djembe. We all formed a band at the end, playing various instruments and enjoying the music.

Kwame taught us an African dance that we took pleasure in performing.

Colourful birds were made out of milk cartons, they are now hanging in their classrooms as a fond reminder of a fantastic African day!
