Financial Education at RSM

Research has shown that Financial Education can have a lasting impact on the financial literacy of children into adulthood. it helps to build and develop the skills children need to be able to make the most of money, avoid debt and plan for the future.

At RSM we have been introducing Financial Education as part of the wider Maths and PSHE curriculum this year.

The Reception children have been enjoying role playing shops this week. As part of our Financial Education lessons, we have been introducing the children to the concept of money. The children have been learning that, in order to get money to spend in a shop, they have to earn it. They did little jobs around the classroom, for example, tidying up, putting the books away, for which they got some wages! We then discussed the importance of having the mindset of saving some and spending some. The children loved this – their first shop was a toy shop, and then later a fruit and veg shop. It was great fun.

This week, we have been excited to bring Year 5 their first Financial Education week. During their maths lessons, they all became teams of financial advisors. They have spent the week advising the Beano characters on how to make some good financial decisions, and they gave some fantastic advice! By carefully comparing the options and drawing on their super maths skills, they have advised on which shopping deals would the best value, which bank account might be the best to save their money in and even helped the Beano crew avoid getting into debt. Year 5 have all really impressed us with how thoughtful they were and what great financial advice they gave.
