RSM in the First LEGO League Regional Final

On Thursday, ‘Razor Sharp Minds’, a team of Year 6 pupils, travelled to the Gatwick STEM Centre to compete in the Sussex Regional Final of the Submerged First LEGO League Competition. This prestigious event challenges children to develop their STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) skills, encouraging them to apply their learning with creativity and an interdisciplinary approach.

Competing against 15 teams, Razor Sharp Minds were one of only two primary schools at the event. Throughout the day, the team showcased exceptional teamwork, confident presentation skills, strong technical understanding, and determined piloting of their robot. They had designed and programmed an autonomous LEGO Spike Prime robot, Coral, to complete missions in the Robot Game. Although Coral had an off day, the team demonstrated remarkable perseverance and resilience, achieving a respectable score despite the challenges.

For their Innovation Project, the team tackled the issue of plastic and microplastic pollution in our oceans. They developed an engaging presentation promoting bamboo-based alternatives to plastic and created a captivating stop-motion video. Their concept featured an autonomous robot powered by green energy, designed to dive continuously, collect plastic waste from the ocean, and deposit it onto a ship for grinding and recycling. The judges were highly impressed and awarded Razor Sharp Minds the prestigious Innovation Project Award!

Congratulations to Alyssa, Christopher, Archer, William, Noah, Edward, and Josie! The team were outstanding throughout the competition – well done on your incredible achievement and thank you for your dedication and hard work.

A huge thank you to the parents for their support, enabling the pupils to prepare at our weekly club. Special thanks to Dr. Shoosmith, an Oceanographer and resident expert, for her invaluable advice, and to Mrs. Clark for her incredible support on the day. I would also like to thank Mrs Becker I would also like to extend my gratitude to Mrs. Becker for the wonderful Plastic Changemakers animal costumes. They were a fantastic addition, enhancing the children’s presentation and bringing their message to life.
