STEAMing Towards a Greener Future

Packed with exciting, climate change-themed activities organised by the brilliant Miss de Graauw, our much-anticipated STEAM Day has finally arrived, and what a way to start the week! This year, the focus has been on understanding climate change, what it is, why it matters, and how we can all play a role in protecting our planet. The day has been filled with engaging and thought-provoking activities, with senior school students from RGS joining us at RSM.

The day began with a special assembly featuring guest speaker Richard Dunne, founder of The Harmony Project, an education charity which aims to put sustainability and nature at the heart of the curriculum. He spoke to the children about his recent expedition to Antarctica, with the aim to inspire the next generation to find solutions to the environmental challenges caused by humans. His talk set the stage for meaningful discussions on climate change and an exciting day of hands-on learning.

Mixed-year groups from Year 3 to 6, each named after an inspirational leader in environmentalism and activism, including Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg, renowned natural historian Sir David Attenborough, pioneering primatologist Dr. Jane Goodall, Nobel Peace Laureate Malala Yousafzai, and environmental advocate Al Gore, then embarked on their first task of the day.

Throughout the day, they collaborated on various projects across different subjects. In science, they conducted an experiment comparing the impact of melting ice in the Antarctic and Arctic, exploring the effects of land-based versus sea-based ice loss on rising sea levels. In technology, the children developed AI-powered inventions for harvesting energy. In art they designed “climate warrior” badges, while in maths, they calculated their carbon footprints. These activities encouraged creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving, helping them develop ideas that could contribute to real-world solutions.

To reinforce the importance of sustainability, the children also enjoyed a climate-friendly themed lunch organised by our catering team, emphasising the impact of their choices on the planet.

By inspiring young minds, we hope to equip them with the knowledge, passion, and influence to build a better future, one where protecting our planet is a priority. To view highlights of the day, please click here
