Success Comes From Having A Growth Mindset

This morning, Mrs Gower delivered an inspiring assembly on the link between having a growth mindset and achieving success.

She explored the difference between a fixed mindset and a growth mindset, and posed the question: What does success really look like?

Success is not an overnight event; it is the result of small, consistent efforts repeated day in and day out. As Winston Churchill once said, “Success consists of going from failure to failure without loss of enthusiasm.” Similarly, Bill Gates reminds us, “It is fine to celebrate success, but it is more important to take notice of the lessons of failure.”

So, how do people become successful? Mindset plays a crucial role.

At RSM, we believe success begins with adopting a growth mindset:

  • I can learn anything I set my mind to.
  • I am willing to challenge myself.
  • When I fail, I learn.
  • When I feel frustrated, I persevere.

This mindset is a vital part of the journey. We must resist the urge to give up, even when things get difficult. Many of the most successful people in the world faced failure, often repeatedly, but what set them apart was their determination to keep going.

We also need to pay attention to how we speak to ourselves. The simple word “yet” can make a huge difference:

  • I can’t do this… yet.
  • I haven’t mastered this… yet.

Another powerful metaphor Mrs Gower shared was the image of an iceberg. Success is like an iceberg – what you see above the surface is just the tip. Beneath it lies effort, persistence, learning from failure, and countless unseen struggles.

As we embrace new opportunities, it’s important to remember: every expert was once a beginner.

By cultivating a growth mindset, we open the door to learning, resilience, and ultimately, success.
