Upper School - Years 3 to 6

We are passionate about teaching children in the Upper School to be independent and resilient thinkers, fully equipped to reach their individual potential, whatever form that takes.

We want RSM pupils to move on to senior school as good citizens, with the confidence to make the right choices and the skills needed to lead happy and successful lives.

A Broad Curriculum
The curriculum at RSM is carefully tailored to develop the strengths and future potential of each child. Alongside the core subjects, a rich and stimulating programme encompasses STEM, computing, languages, science, philosophy, PSHE, the humanities, art, drama, music and sport. Pupils proudly represent RSM in competitive sports fixtures and our Lego Robotics team has an impressive array of (Lego) cups after annual competition successes. Years 5 and 6 pupils perform an exciting musical every summer, and we all benefit from being a school with music at its heart, whether as a chorister or as a member of our ensembles, concerts or informal performances.

Excellent Academic Outcomes
RSM is a non-selective intake school, yet typically 80 to 90% of pupils transfer to Reigate Grammar School, with others progressing to a range of highly-regarded senior schools. We attribute this success to a creative curriculum which is both challenging and supportive, a problem-solving approach to learning, and a breadth of study that allows children to develop their interests. Excellent staff to pupil ratios give our outstanding teachers and teaching assistants time to build meaningful relationships with each child, and to provide stretch or support when needed.

Preparation for Life
Growth mindset is encouraged in the Upper School, where we focus on developing confidence and enhancing communication and leadership skills. From Year 5, pupils gradually take on more responsibility within the school, training as Peer Mediators, while in Year 6, all children have a leadership role in an area of their choice; whether IT, Sports, Values, Science, Library or Environmental.

Education for Social Responsibility (ESR)
Our ESR curriculum ensures that Education for Social Responsibility is embedded within the culture of our school. Upper School pupils participate in a Community Outreach Programme, explore and debate moral dilemmas and contemporary issues in Philosophy for Children (P4C) and are consistently encouraged to think of the wellbeing of their community and of the planet as well as their own.

Older pupils accept responsibility and grow in maturity through the many important leadership roles they are given.

ISI Inspection Report Feb 2023

Our daughter has recently joined RSM in year 3 and has settled in very quickly. She is very happy and has become much more confident since joining. All of the staff and pupils have been fantastic; extremely welcoming and kind to her. We have been very impressed with the high standard of work she is now achieving.
