Reception: Building Strong Foundations
Transitioning into Reception is a seamless experience. Children progressing from our Kindergarten are already acquainted with our staff and routines, and those joining us new are invited to familiarisation sessions during the summer term to ensure they feel welcome and quickly become part of the RSM family.
A Joyful Start
Our Reception curriculum is rooted in the Early Years Foundation Stage framework, tailored to meet each child's unique needs while reflecting our school's ethos. Emphasising individual, child-initiated learning, we make education both fun and creative. Characters like Have a Go Hippo, Choosing Chimp, and Busy Bee inspire children to embrace new challenges and learn from their experiences.

Specialists, Space, and Support
We invest in exceptional teachers and teaching assistants, ensuring personalised attention that enhances learning. Specialist instruction in Games, PE, Music, IT, and Spanish further enriches the educational journey. Our beautiful 15-acre campus serves as an extended classroom, with dedicated playgrounds, nature reserves, and a Forest School area where children can explore and learn amidst nature.
Years 1 and 2: Expanding Horizons
As children progress to Years 1 and 2, they encounter stimulating and interactive lessons that emphasise problem-solving and critical thinking. The transition is thoughtfully managed; Year 1 teachers engage with Reception classes during the summer term, fostering familiarity and easing the move. Classrooms are strategically located to encourage ongoing interaction and curiosity about the learning journey ahead.
While our curriculum aligns with the National Curriculum Framework, our independent status allows us to delve deeper, incorporating concepts like Philosophy for Children (P4C) and Education for Social Responsibility (ESR) to cultivate essential soft skills. Our pupils consistently perform above the national average by the end of Key Stage 1.
Specialist Teaching and
Technology Skills
Specialist teachers continue to guide students in Games, PE, Music, IT and Spanish. By Year 3, children are adept at using various software on both Mac and PC platforms, have begun touch typing, and possess a solid understanding of E-Safety. Our expansive grounds are regularly utilised for outdoor learning, team sports, and fitness activities.
The Forest School remains a cherished space where children explore, investigate, and develop resilience.

Growth & Emotional Skills
Throughout these formative years, we emphasise growth mindset principles, encouraging children to view challenges as opportunities. The supportive presence of Have a Go Hippo, Choosing Chimp, and Busy Bee continues, reinforcing positive learning behaviours and building confidence. By the end of Year 2, our students are well-prepared, both academically and emotionally, to embrace the adventures that await in the Upper School.
At Reigate St. Mary's, we are committed to providing a nurturing and stimulating environment where every child can thrive, laying the groundwork for a lifetime of learning and success.
