Eco Sustainable

We are thrilled to announce that Reigate St Mary’s, for the second year running, has been awarded the prestigious Eco-Schools Green Flag with Distinction for 2024-25 - an honour that recognises our deep-rooted commitment to environmental sustainability and the inspiring efforts of our entire school community.

The Eco-Schools programme is the largest sustainable schools initiative in the world, empowering young people to take action on environmental issues and make a positive impact in their schools and communities. Achieving the Green Flag with Distinction places Reigate St Mary’s among a select group of schools demonstrating exceptional dedication to eco-conscious learning and practice.

A Culture of Sustainability

At Reigate St Mary’s, sustainability is not a side project - it’s woven into the fabric of our ethos. Through our Education for Social Responsibility (ESR) curriculum, we encourage children to think deeply about the values that lead to fulfilled lives and thriving communities, while protecting the planet for future generations.

Our pupils learn:

  • That a healthy, balanced life isn’t built around materialism
  • That teamwork thrives on harmony and mutual support
  • That our future depends on life-sustaining ecosystems across the globe

From CO₂ monitoring systems and proactive Eco Committee initiatives, to our Year 6 Green Leaders who champion carbon reduction strategies, every corner of our school reflects our environmental mission.

Highlights from Our Eco-Schools Journey

Over the last academic year, our greatest success has been embedding sustainability into the heart of school life. The Eco-Schools team praised our students’ passion and understanding, noting standout projects such as:

  • A collaborative meat-free cookbook, STEAM days, and Gardening Missions
  • Creative reuse initiatives for World Book Day costumes
  • Marine conservation efforts including a giant fish sculpture and lessons on ocean plastics
  • Expanded recycling through Terracycle bins and composting schemes

These projects not only reduce our environmental footprint—they build a culture of care, creativity, and community.

Looking Ahead

Our commitment to sustainability continues to grow. The recent opening of Beech Lodge, our eco-friendly classroom block, showcases our dedication to modern, low-impact building practices. With energy-efficient lighting, natural wood cladding, and high-performance insulation, it’s a space that reflects our values and inspires future learning.

We are incredibly proud of this recognition and grateful to every pupil, teacher, and parent who has contributed to our journey. The Green Flag with Distinction is more than an award - it’s a testament to what we can achieve when we work together to protect our planet.
