Building Confidence, Creativity and Character Through Drama

Drama

Drama plays a vibrant and valued role in life at Reigate St Mary’s, offering pupils a creative space to build confidence, develop empathy and discover their voice. From Year 3 through to Year 6, children take part in a carefully structured drama curriculum that nurtures skills, creativity and personal growth, culminating in high‑quality whole‑school productions.

Our drama programme follows the National Curriculum and is led by specialist staff, ensuring a clear progression of skills over four years. Children begin their journey in Year 3, often having only experienced drama through classroom role‑play, and gradually develop confidence in improvisation, characterisation, movement and vocal work. By the time they reach Year 6, pupils are able to sustain a character, communicate clearly on stage and work collaboratively within a performance environment.

Drama lessons provide a safe and supportive space where children are encouraged to explore identity, empathy and different perspectives. Through drama, pupils are able to “be someone else for a while”, allowing quieter or more reserved children to flourish and find confidence in ways they may not in other areas of the curriculum.

Each child in Years 3 to 6 enjoys a dedicated weekly drama lesson, and this classroom learning is brought to life through a rich programme of performances. The highlight of the year is the Spring production for Years 5 and 6, in which every child is involved - either on stage or as part of the backstage crew. Pupils take part in informal auditions, prepare extracts from the script and experience the full rehearsal and performance process, developing responsibility, teamwork and resilience along the way.

Drama at Reigate St Mary’s is supported by a broad performing arts culture across the school. Seasonal performances include the Upper School Christmas Concert, alongside Christmas productions for Lower School and Early Years. Dance also plays an important complementary role, with professionally led ballet, tap and creative dance clubs available from Years 1 to 6. Within these clubs, children not only learn choreography but also have opportunities to create their own, developing independence and creative ownership.

Leadership is an integral part of the drama offering. Year 6 Drama Ambassadors play an active role in school life, co‑running a drama club for Years 3 and 4. In this role, pupils plan activities, lead drama games and model confidence and collaboration for younger children - skills that extend well beyond the stage.

The impact of drama is evident in the enthusiasm and engagement of the pupils. Every child participates in performances throughout the year, and many experience powerful “wow” moments when they surprise themselves by stepping confidently into a role. Children consistently describe drama as a highlight of their week, often commenting that lessons feel too short and expressing how much they enjoy the freedom, focus and creativity of the dedicated drama space.

By combining specialist teaching, inclusive participation and meaningful leadership opportunities, drama at Reigate St Mary’s offers far more than performance alone. It builds confidence without showiness, nurtures empathy and communication skills, and helps children develop the resilience and self‑belief needed both on stage and in everyday life.
