Exploring Patterns in the 3 Times Table

Year Group Update

Children in Year 3 have been learning to use the “3 more” and “3 less” pattern to find the next or previous number in the 3 times table. By recognising that each number in the 3 times table increases or decreases by 3, children began to see multiplication as a repeated addition or subtraction pattern. For example, if 5 × 3 = 15, then 6 × 3 is 3 more (18), and 4 × 3 is 3 less (12). This approach strengthened number fluency and helped students make connections between addition, subtraction, and multiplication.
