Exploring Picasso and Sensory Science: A Creative Week in Year One

Year Group Update Year 1

This week, the children explored the fascinating world of Pablo Picasso! They discovered that Picasso was a famous Spanish artist who loved experimenting with shapes and colours. We introduced them to Cubism, an art style where pictures are broken into shapes like squares, triangles, and rectangles, then rearranged in a fun, mixed-up way.

After studying some of Picasso’s portraits, the children created their own Cubist-style faces using a collage technique. They cut out colourful shapes and arranged them to make playful, abstract portraits—just like Picasso! This hands-on activity encouraged creativity and helped develop fine motor skills as they experimented with composition and design. It was wonderful to see their imaginations come alive as they learned that art doesn’t always have to look “perfect” - it can be bold, bright, and surprising too.

In Science, the children learned about their sense of taste through a sensory investigation. The challenge? Helping Miss Clark choose a new breakfast option for Breakfast Club! Using their senses of smell and taste, the children sampled four different porridge toppings: strawberry, banana, dates, and honey.

They explored how each topping looked, smelled, and tasted, then shared their favourites. The class also discussed which topping would be the healthiest choice to recommend. By the end of the lesson, the children had compared flavours, made decisions based on their senses, and reflected on healthy eating. Finally, they voted on the topping they would recommend for Breakfast Club - balancing both taste and healthiness.
