This term, our Year 1 children have been exploring what it means to be eco‑friendly, helping the Queen and Prince design a greener castle as part of their topic work. Following on from designing recycling bins for the castle last week, the children turned their attention to what happens to rubbish that isn’t recycled, and why landfill can be such a problem for our planet.
The highlight of the week was a hands‑on investigation, where the children helped to bury different types of rubbish so they can observe how materials change over time. They made thoughtful predictions about which items might break down quickly and which could remain in the ground for much longer.
To conclude the topic, the children discussed what can and cannot be recycled at home, thinking carefully about small, everyday choices we can all make to reduce waste and protect the environment. It was a fun and practical lesson that encouraged curiosity, responsibility and early sustainability awareness.

Alongside this, Year 1 also enjoyed outdoor maths learning, using Numicon to explore doubling. Working with a partner, the children searched for matching Numicon pieces to represent doubles and then recorded their number sentences. There was lots of excitement, teamwork and excellent mathematical thinking on display - super doubling work, Year 1!
