Senses and Robots: Year 1 Explore the World Around Them and the World of Coding

Science Lower School

In Science this week, the children in Year 1 have been learning about the five senses – sight, hearing, touch, taste, and smell – and how we use them to explore and understand the world around us. We began by discussing each sense in turn, identifying the body part linked to it, and thinking about examples of how we use our senses every day.

Afterwards, the children became scavenger hunters on an exciting outdoor adventure around the school playground! Using their senses, they explored their surroundings carefully and recorded what they could see, hear, feel, and smell. From the sound of birds chirping to the rough texture of tree bark and the smell of fresh grass, the children made wonderful observations and enjoyed discovering how their senses help them experience the world in different ways.

This activity encouraged curiosity, observation skills, and descriptive language, while helping the children make real-world connections to their learning.

In computing, the children in have also had a fantastic start to the half term, diving into the world of algorithms! They’ve been learning how all computers rely on programs created by programmers. Their first activity involved giving clear, step-by-step instructions to guide the class robot safely to the trophy, an exciting way to introduce the concept of coding. The children showed a great early understanding of algorithms and are looking forward to continuing their learning on the computers next week.
