Reception’s Bear Hunt Adventure: Exploring Prepositions Through Play
Share
Reception Early Years

This week, our Reception children have been busy developing their understanding of spatial awareness and prepositions, and what a fun-filled week it’s been!

We began by exploring how to describe where things are, using words like *under*, *behind*, *next to*, and *between*. The children played lots of exciting games in pairs — one partner carefully hid a teddy bear while the other had to listen and follow instructions to find it. There was so much laughter as they tested out their clues and gave directions to one another!

Taking our learning outdoors, we continued to practise by finding different hiding spots around the playground, using our new prepositional language to describe exactly where the bear could be found.

To finish the week, we enjoyed the much-loved story We’re Going on a Bear Hunt. Together, we spotted all the positional words in the story and even created our own version! The children came up with imaginative lines like,

  • Oh no, a swirling, whirling snowstorm!
  • We can’t go left of it, we can’t go right of it…
  • We’ll have to go catch a helicopter over it

It’s been wonderful to see the children using such rich language, thinking carefully about position and direction, and having so much fun with their maths learning this week!
