This week the children in Kindergarten have been learning all about the Arctic as part of our ‘Let’s Explore Habitats’ topic. We have been discovering how different Arctic animals are specially adapted to survive in the cold conditions. The children especially loved learning that polar bears have a thick layer of fat called blubber — they found this word absolutely hilarious and it caused lots of giggles throughout the week!

To finish our learning, we transformed into scientists and carried out a fun experiment. The children wore two gloves and covered one glove in a layer of lard to represent blubber, while the other glove remained clean. They predicted which hand would feel warmer before placing both hands into cold water to test their ideas. The children were amazed to feel the difference and thoroughly enjoyed the activity.
It was a fantastic hands-on learning experience and there were plenty of smiles and laughter along the way!
