Which Material Is Strongest? A Fun Building Challenge for Reception
Share
Reception Early Years

This week, Mr Strong left the children a building challenge!

He asked them to predict which material would be the strongest to build a structure with: wood, magnets or card. The children independently shared their ideas and recorded their predictions and reasons, with some explaining their thinking using prior experiences (e.g. “wood is hard” or “magnets stick together”).

The children then worked collaboratively in small teams to plan and build their structures, negotiating roles and sharing resources. They showed perseverance as they tested different ways to balance and join materials.

To test the strength of their structures, Mr Strong even left some boiled eggs (his favourite!) which the children carefully placed on top to see which structures could hold the weight.

The children were highly engaged throughout, excited to test their ideas and eager to see the results. Many adjusted their designs after testing, demonstrating problem-solving and critical thinking!
